What Plan My Room does
Plan My Room is the free acoustic panel planner on AcousticSoundPanels.com. Answer four short screens about your space and it returns a specific panel plan: how many panels the room needs, what size and thickness they are, which walls and ceiling areas they go on, a modeled before and after echo curve, and a real price range from the live catalog. Nothing is charged to use it, and no card is asked for.
The planner runs the same coverage math ASP uses to build customer proposals. It is not a lead form with a number attached to it. Enter a 24 ft by 20 ft office with a 9 ft ceiling and it will tell you 40 standard panels at 25 percent coverage, show you where they sit on each wall, and show what the room sounds like after.
Two inputs drive it, and either one alone is enough. Room dimensions give you the plan. Optional photos of your four walls and ceiling make the layout sharper, because a specialist can then see windows, doors, brick, artwork and the things the math cannot know about. Most people enter dimensions, get their plan on screen, and send it for a full quote.
Who Plan My Room is for
- Anyone who already knows the room is too loud or too echoey and wants a number instead of an estimate. Offices, home theaters, studios, restaurants, churches, gyms and classrooms all have preset starting sizes in the tool.
- People pricing a project before they talk to anyone. The plan shows a real price range from live catalog pricing, so you can size the budget on your own time.
- Facility managers and contractors who need a defensible panel count and a layout to hand to whoever approves the spend. Plans can be shared by link or emailed as a copy.
- DIY installers. Panels arrive with Z-clips included, so a plan plus a level and a drill is the whole install.

How Plan My Room works, step by step
- Pick your space type. Home theater, studio, office, restaurant, church, gym, classroom or other. The choice sets a starting room size and the coverage target ASP recommends for that use. Every value stays editable after this.
- Set the room size, and add photos if you want. Length, width and ceiling height in feet, adjusted with plus and minus steppers. Rough numbers are fine. You can also tap what the problem is (echo and ringing, muddy speech, too loud, or recording quality), which raises the coverage target when the problem calls for it. Photo slots cover Wall 1 through Wall 4 plus the ceiling and are entirely optional.
- Mark the surfaces that can take panels. A top down view of the room shows four wall bars. Tap any wall to skip it, for a window wall, a glass partition, a fireplace or anything you do not want drilled. The ceiling can be switched off the same way. The panel count and layout update live as you tap.
- Read your plan. Panel count, the percentage of total surface treated, panel size, an estimated price range from live catalog pricing, a modeled echo curve before and after, and an interactive per wall layout you can nudge panel by panel. You can switch between Good, Better and Best coverage, pick a fabric color, and see the large format version of the same plan when the room is big enough to warrant it.
- Send it, or keep it. Send My Plan hands it to an ASP specialist who builds the full plan with final pricing. You can also email yourself a copy or share the plan as a link, and buy directly from the plan when the panels you need are stock configurations.
Worked example: a 24 ft by 20 ft home office
Room is 24 ft long, 20 ft wide, with a 9 ft ceiling. Office space type, which starts at the Better coverage tier at 25 percent, with the ceiling included. Standard 24 in by 48 in panels cover 8 sq ft each.
Wall area = 2 x (24 x 9) + 2 x (20 x 9) = 432 + 360 = 792 sq ft
Ceiling area = 24 x 20 = 480 sq ft
Total treatment area = 792 + 480 = 1,272 sq ft
Coverage target = 1,272 x 0.25 = 318 sq ft
Panel count = 318 / 8 = 39.75, rounded up to 40 panels
Result: 40 standard 24 in by 48 in by 2 in panels, treating about 25 percent of the room. The planner spreads them across the four walls by wall area, puts the remainder on the ceiling, and shows the layout wall by wall. No bass traps are suggested, because an office is a speech clarity problem rather than a low frequency problem.
The floor area here is 480 sq ft, past the 300 sq ft mark, so the planner also offers the large format version of the same plan: 318 sq ft of coverage divided by the 32 sq ft a 48 in by 96 in panel covers is 10 panels. Ten pieces instead of forty means a quarter of the holes in the wall and a quarter of the hanging time.
Worked example: a 40 ft by 30 ft restaurant dining room
Room is 40 ft long, 30 ft wide, with an 11 ft ceiling. Restaurant space type, which starts at the Good coverage tier at 18 percent so the room quiets down without going dead, with the ceiling included.
Wall area = 2 x (40 x 11) + 2 x (30 x 11) = 880 + 660 = 1,540 sq ft
Ceiling area = 40 x 30 = 1,200 sq ft
Total treatment area = 1,540 + 1,200 = 2,740 sq ft
Coverage target = 2,740 x 0.18 = 493.2 sq ft
Panel count = 493.2 / 8 = 61.65, rounded up to 62 panels
Large format version = 493.2 / 32 = 15.4, rounded up to 16 panels
Result: 62 standard panels, or 16 large format 48 in by 96 in panels. At 1,200 sq ft of floor the large format plan is the better call. Restaurants also tend to have window walls and a bar back that cannot take panels, which is what the skip a wall control on step three is for. Skip them and the plan redistributes to the surfaces that are actually available.
What the coverage tiers mean
Every plan starts on the tier that matches the space type, and you can move it up or down on the plan screen. The tier sets what percentage of the room's total surface area gets covered.

Picking a problem on step two only ever moves the tier up. Saying speech is muddy or the room is too loud raises a Good plan to Better. Saying the issue is recording quality raises it to Best. Nothing you tap will quietly lower your coverage.
Which panel thickness does the plan use?
Plan My Room builds the standard 2-inch plan by default, because 2-inch is the right answer for most rooms. NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) runs from 0 to 1, where 1.0 means the surface absorbs essentially all the sound energy reaching it.

NRC 1.0 applies to the 2-inch panel only. A 1-inch panel is NRC 0.80, Intertek tested per ASTM C423. If a supplier quotes NRC 1.0 on a 1-inch panel, ask which test the number came from.
When to choose 1-inch over 2-inch
- Choose 2-inch unless you have a specific reason not to. It absorbs across the full speech and music range and it is what the planner prices.
- Choose 1-inch for a voice booth, a dialog or voiceover space, or a room where you want high and mid frequency control without pulling energy out of the low end. It also suits shallow reveals and tight mounting depths.
- Add 4-inch corner bass traps when the room is used for recording, mixing, mastering, or a home theater with a subwoofer. Low frequency energy collects where surfaces meet, so the corners are where it needs to be absorbed. Offices, classrooms, restaurants and gyms generally do not need them.

When does the plan switch to large format panels?
Once the room floor area passes 300 sq ft, the planner shows the large format version of the plan alongside the standard one. A 48 in by 96 in panel covers 32 sq ft, four times what a standard 24 in by 48 in panel covers, so the same coverage target is met with a quarter of the pieces and a quarter of the mounting work.
When live catalog pricing and the freight minimum both line up, that large format plan is directly purchasable from the plan screen with its real price on it.
Large format panels are sold in a freight combine pool with a 5 piece minimum. They ship by freight, dock to dock. A liftgate is available as an add-on for locations without a loading dock.
What does it cost to use Plan My Room?
Nothing. The planner is free, there is no account, no card and no obligation. You get the panel count, the layout and a price range on screen whether or not you ever send the plan. Sending it is also free, and the Free Room Analysis path where a specialist studies your room and builds the plan for you costs nothing either.
The only thing you pay for is panels, when you decide to order them.
What happens after you send your plan?
An ASP specialist picks it up with everything you entered attached: room type, dimensions, the surfaces you marked as available, the problem you described, any photos you added, and the plan the tool produced. They confirm the layout, adjust anything the math could not see, and send back a full proposal with final pricing.
Nothing is charged and nothing is ordered at that point. The proposal is a document you can approve, change, or sit on.
What to have ready
- Rough room dimensions in feet. Length, width, ceiling height.
- What the room is used for, and what specifically bothers you about how it sounds.
- Which walls cannot take panels, if any. Windows, glass, brick, storefront, artwork.
- Photos of each wall and the ceiling, if you have a phone handy. Optional, and they make the layout noticeably sharper.
Do photos change the plan?
Photos do not change the coverage math, which runs off the dimensions. They change the layout. A specialist reviewing your photos can see the window that takes up half of wall two, the door swing that rules out a corner, the ceiling grid that decides how panels sit overhead, and the artwork you are not going to move. That is the difference between a panel count and a plan you can actually hang.
Five slots are offered, one per wall plus the ceiling. Add all five, add one, or add none. The planner works either way.
How accurate is the modeled before and after?
The echo curve on the plan screen is a model, not a measurement. It computes reverberation time across six octave bands from 125 Hz to 4 kHz using the room volume, the total surface area, and the published absorption coefficients of the panels being placed. It shows you the shape of the change and roughly how much ring comes out of the room.
What it cannot know is your furniture, your carpet, your glass, or the wall construction behind the drywall. Treat it as a well grounded estimate rather than a measured result. If the room has a specific frequency problem, say so on the send screen and a specialist will look at it directly.
Will these panels stop noise coming from another room?
No, and Plan My Room does not plan for that. Soundproofing means blocking sound from passing through a wall, floor or ceiling. Acoustic treatment means reducing echo and reverb inside a room. They are different problems with different solutions.
Panels on the wall absorb the sound already in your room. They will not keep a drum kit from reaching a neighbor, and they will not keep traffic noise out. Blocking sound transmission is a construction problem: mass, decoupling and sealing air gaps. One product in the ASP catalog is rated for sound transmission rather than absorption, the Homasote Sound Barrier DesignWall 440.
What are the panels made of?
- Core: American made rigid fiberglass, formaldehyde free. Never foam.
- Frame: an internal wood frame around the perimeter, which is what the mounting hardware screws into.
- Face: Burch Fabrics Prime Time, the Made in the USA equivalent of Guilford of Maine (a Canadian company) Anchorage and FR701. Acoustically transparent, with over 60 stocked colors. Microsuede and burlap are also available.
- Fire rating: Class A per ASTM E-84.
- Mounting: Z-clips included. A standard 24 in by 48 in by 2 in panel weighs about 8 lbs.
You can pick the fabric line and color inside the planner, and the plan carries that choice through to the proposal.
How do I confirm the fabric color before ordering?
Order refundable swatch samples. The sample cost is credited back on your order, so you can hold the fabric against your wall and your lighting before committing to a full set. Colors on a screen shift with the monitor, and this is the fix.
Can I change the plan after the tool builds it?
Yes, and most people do. On the plan screen you can move between Good, Better and Best coverage, switch which walls carry panels, adjust the count on any single wall up or down, turn the ceiling on or off, set the ceiling count directly, and change the fabric line and color. Everything recalculates live, including the price range and the echo curve.
The per wall controls are bounded by what will physically fit on that wall, so you cannot build a plan that cannot be hung. If you want more coverage than a wall can hold, the extra panels move to another surface rather than disappearing.
