How much acoustic foam do I need?

Absolutely NONE... Acoustic foam is completely ineffective on lower / lower mid frequencies, not to mention flammable and made in China from undisclosed toxic materials. Don't say we didn't warn you.

DIY Acoustic Panels

Are great if you are handy and a very popular option. However, if you are looking for acoustic panels on Craigslist you want to be careful to completely inspect the sound treatments for damage, mold or other defects that will impact performance. You also want to make sure to buy from a trustworthy seller, good luck finding too many of those on CL. Egg crate foam for acoustics?

Sorry folks, it simply doesn't work. At best you may absorb the highest of frequencies which is great if you are trying to capture a recording of a dog whistle or even the occasional dolphin. 

Furniture acoustics?

Actually in a pinch it could work, however, less than ideal. Keep in mind that a leather couch (even though you see them in many studios) are actually reflective and do a disservice. Leather is not acoustically transparent. A simple test you can do to test transparency of acoustic fabric is to breathe through it, if you can feel your breath on the back side of the fabric, you may be in luck.
