What changes when a room goes from untreated to foam to acoustic panels?

An untreated room has hard, reflective walls that create audible echo, flutter and a harsh, boxy sound. Foam wedges knock down some of that harshness at higher frequencies. A room with rigid, high-density fabric-wrapped panels controls a wider range of frequencies and sounds noticeably calmer and clearer.

The difference comes down to how much of the sound energy hitting a surface actually gets absorbed instead of bounced back. Bare walls reflect almost everything, which is why an empty room sounds sharp and echoey even when it's quiet otherwise. Foam interrupts some of that at higher frequencies, since it's light and mostly effective there. A rigid, high-density core absorbs across a wider range, which is why full panel treatment sounds like a different room, not just a slightly quieter one.
